Todd James “Supernatural” @ Sandra Gering Inc.

Drawing upon his “colorful cast of warriors, sunbathers, sorcerers and girlfriends,” Todd James is set to make his way to New York’s Sandra Gering Inc. this month with “Supernatural.” Featuring all new paintings and drawings, the display will likely see James’s usual balance of comedy and tragedy – probably with an emphasis on the humorous and scantily-clad, all in an atmosphere that combines James’s signature expression of the fantasy and heavy metal. “Supernatural” opens February 27 and will be on display in the Big Apple through March 29.

After photographing the star for the cover story of the latest GQ, Terry Richardson was able to get LeBron James into his studios for his latest shoot. It’s been a busy few weeks for LeBron with the NBA All-Star break and its surrounding festivities and his buzzed about interview in which he stated that he belonged among the NBA’s top four players. Clearly, LBJ had greatness on his mind when he walked into Richardson’s studio rocking a Marcelo Burlon T-shirt emblazoned with a bold roaring lion. Check out photos from the shoot now.

Ai Weiwei Doesn’t See Irony in Smashed Vase

Image

A recent visitor to the Perez Art Museum in Miami is facing charges after he smashed one of Ai Weiwei‘s painted vases valued at $1,ooo,ooo USD. Maxmio Carminero, 51, was charged with criminal mischief for smashing the vase as an act of protest against the museum’s decision to only display works by international artists rather than those of local artists. The vase was one of 16 repainted Han Dynasty urns that were part of a larger exhibition by the artist.
Carminero, himself an artist, was quoted as saying: “I did it for all the local artists in Miami that have never been shown in museums here…they have spent so many millions now on international artists.”
Despite having a history of painting over and destroying ancient vases himself, Ai Weiwei didn’t see any irony in Carminero’s actions.
“The work I work on [does] not belong to a museum or other people’s property. I never tried to destroy a museum piece – those vases belong to me,” he said. “He can drop whatever he likes to drop, but not other people’s property.”
That being said, the Chinese artist saw a plus side to the incident in that it would attract more attention to the show, whose attendance has been lackluster as of late.
“Now the show will be noticed. Are people really interested in the art, or something else?”

George Condo “Ink Drawings” at Skarstedt Gallery London

For his third solo show at Skarstedt, George Condo brings a collection of drawings that have been realized over a six month period. In talking about his latest exhibition, the American artist said, “My intention with this body of work was to explore the extreme possibilities of ink on paper. I used the medium to create transparent layers of colors. I thought of Rothko at times and his overlapping veils of transcendental space. I placed the figure into this kind of space and used lines to define their ambiguous presence in the void.” George Condo’s Skarstedt show is open now until April 5, 2015.
